After trimming down their active roster to 75 players on Tuesday, the Oakland Raiders continued their cutting process in order to release their initial list of 53 athletes that will represent the Silver & Black in the 2013 regular season.
Among notable cuts, Oakland has parted ways with veterans defensive end Andre Carter and cornerback Joselio Hanson (removing him from the Injured Reserve) and former recent draft selections TE Richard Gordon (6th rounder in 2011) and DE David Bass (7th rounder this year). Also, the coaching staff has decided to go with four quarterback and two punters by now, as we should expect a few moves to be made on this list in the upcoming days as the Raiders turn their focus to the waiver wire.
Here’s the complete 53-man roster of the Oakland Raiders as announced this Saturday:
Quarterbacks (4): Matt Flynn, Terrelle Pryor, Matt McGloin and Tyler Wilson – Both rookies, McGloin and Wilson, make the initial list after battling throughout camp for the 3rd string spot.
Running backs (5): Darren McFadden, Rashad Jennings, Jeremy Stewart, Marcel Reece and Jamize Olawale – No surprises here as Olawale was constantly used with the first team offense during the pre-season.
Wide Receivers (5): Rod Streater, Denarius Moore, Jacoby Ford, Juron Criner and Brice Butler – Undrafted rookies Vernon and Jenkins both do not make the team, but could be headed to the practice squad. Vernon missed time with an undisclosed injury and was used mostly in the slot. Jenkins, a former college quarterback, appeared well as a kickoff returner.
Tight Ends (4): David Ausberry, Jeron Mastrud, Mychal Rivera and Nick Kasa – Mastrud earned his spot during camp due to his blocking ability, as Richard Gordon gets the axe. Raiders go with four, fitting in the rookies Kasa and Rivera.
Offensive Line (8): Jared Veldheer, Menelik Watson, Alex Barron, Khalif Barnes, Mike Brisiel, Lucas Nix, Stefen Wisniewski and Andre Gurode – Tony Bergstrom heads to the Injured Reserve with a foot injury.
Defensive Line (8): Lamarr Houston, Jason Hunter, Jack Crawford, Ryan Robinson, Pat Sims, Vance Walker, Christo Bilukidi and Stacy McGee – Veteran Andre Carter is the odd man out as undrafted rookie Ryan Robinson earns his spot with a strong pre-season coming off the edge and displaying intriguing pass-rushing ability.
Linebackers (5): Nick Roach, Sio Moore, Kevin Burnett, Kaelin Burnett and Kaluka Maiava – Raiders go with only five LBs as Omar Gaither gets the hammer, with Miles Burris waiting on the PUP list.
Cornerbacks (7): DJ Hayden, Mike Jenkins, Tracy Porter, Philip Adams, Chimdi Chekwa, Brandian Ross and Taiwan Jones – Jones successfully transitions to cornerback after spending first years of his careers as a running back, making the team mostly due to his contribution as a gunner. Ross listed as a CB but will also play as a safety if needed.
Safeties (3): Charles Woodson, Tyvon Branch and Usama Young – No surprises here as veteran Reggie Smith is let go.
Kicker (1): Sebastian Janikowski – the longest tenured Raider poised to having another solid year for the Silver & Black.
Punters (2): Chris Kluwe and Marquette King – Raiders can’t quite decide whether to go with the veteran or the youngster, so they go with the unusual move of keeping two punters, which doesn’t sound like a situation that will last long.
Long Snapper (1): Jon Condo – Condo has recently signed a three-year extension.
The Oakland Raiders will make their regular season debut against the Colts in Indianapolis on September 8th at 10:00 A.M. (PDT).
