After a tough loss to the Falcons, the Oakland Raiders look to continue to show signs of improvement against the Jacksonville Jaguars at the O.co Coliseum. The Silver&Black are the only team not on a bye week in the AFC West division this week and a win against the also 1-4 Jaguars would put them only one game behind the leading Denver Broncos.

Raiders’ players who did not suit up for the game: QB Terrelle Pryor (“C.D.” – Coaches’ Decision); RB Taiwan Jones (knee), TE Richard Gordon (hamstring), OT Khalif Barnes (groin), G Lucas Nix (C.D.), DE Jack Crawford (C.D.) and CB Shawntae Spencer (ankle). Notable inactive for the Jaguars: CB Dwight Lowery (ankle), LB Daryl Smith (groin) and WR Laurent Robinson (concussion).

The Jaguars initiated the game with possession. The Raiders defense was off to a strong start, forcing a 3&out after 2 stuffed runs and a short pass. RB Maurice Jones-Drew was forced to leave the field with an ankle injury, being seen getting his ankle taped on the sidelines. But the raider offense also suffered a 3&out, due to 2 stuffed Darren McFadden runs and an incompletion. It led to another 3&out by the Raiders, similar to the first one: 2 stuffed runs and a short completion allowed. The offense not only avoided another 3&out, but also got to the Jaguars’ 9 yard line with a 58 yards catch and run by Darrius Heyward-Bey. On 3rd&goal, DHB was once again targeted by Carson Palmer, but his reception was short of the endzone. The 21 yard FG by Sebastian Janikowski was good. Jaguars 0 x 3 Raiders.

The raider defense almost accomplished a 3rd consecutive 3&out if it was not by a missed tackle by Philip Wheeler. A completely blown coverage by Phillip Adams and Tyvon Branch let WR Cecil Shorts wide open for a 42-yard  touchdown. Jaguars 7 x 3 Raiders. Starting at their own 44 yard line after a good return by Mike Goodson, the Raiders quickly found themselves in a 3rd&7 situation and had to punt after a short McFadden catch. The Jaguars got to midfield counting with 3 offsides by the Raiders. Mike Mitchell almost got an interception off a Michael Huff tip. On 3rd&9, QB Blaine Gabbert’s pass was incomplete but on the ensuing punt, Phillip Adams fumbled the ball and Jacksonville was back with it at the 16, quickly getting into goal line mode with a completion through the middle. RB Rashad Jennings, replacing Jones-Drew, got the easy TD through the middle. Jaguars 14 x 3 Raiders with 11:34 left in the first half.

The Raiders suffered another 3&out after a stuffed run, a short completion and an incompletion due to heavy pass rush. Miles Burris and Desmond Bryant led the pack to stuff a run and force a Jacksonville punt after just 3 downs. Carson Palmer, instead of taking the sack, tried to make a difficult play as he tossed the ball up on his way down, looking for Denarius Moore, but instead being intercepted after the deflection. The Jaguars offense, now led by QB Chad Henne (Gabbert suffered a left shoulder injury on a nullified Tommy Kelly sack due to offsides on the DT) started at the Raiders’ 36 yard line. 3 plays and no first down later, kicker Josh Scobee nailed the 50 yard FG. Jaguars 17 x 3 Raiders. And then the Jaguars tricked the Raiders with an onside kick, recovering it and taking over at their own 45 yard line. But the defense forced a 4th&1 when Rolando McClain batted down a pass. Jacksonville decided to go for it and turned it over on downs due to great coverage by Oakland on a playaction call. The Raiders got into the redzone with a short completion to Brandon Myers. On the ensuing 3rd&5 at the 15, with 43 seconds left in the half, Palmer wasn’t able to connect with Myers once again. The Janikowski FG was good. At halftime, it’s Jaguars 17 x 6 Raiders.

The Raiders started the second half with their most common play of the season so far, a stuffed McFadden run. That was followed by a fumbled snap by Palmer, recovered by the QB. On 3rd&9, the defense forced an incompletion due to heavy pass rush. The Jaguars began their drive at the Raiders 39 yard line after a good punt return. On a 3rd&7 at the 24, Henne avoided the sack but was dropped by Kelly for a 1 yard run. The 40 yard FG by Scobee was good. Jaguars 20 x 6 Raiders. Operating the no-huddle, Palmer was able to get the offense going and, with a pass interference over Moore, reached the Jaguars 23 yard line. On a 3rd&7 at the 8, Palmer found Moore over the middle and the wide out extended his arms to reach the endzone and get the touchdown. Jaguars 20 x 13 Raiders with 6:01 to go in the 3rd quarter.

The Raiders defense hit the field on fire on the ensuing drive. After great coverage downfield, Miles Burris sacked QB Chad Henne. Lamarr Houston shut down a screen play by dragging the RB backwards. That led to a 3rd&24 at the 3 yard line, and the Raiders forced the punt after a short shovel pass. The offense took over at their own 40 yard line. On a 3rd&9 at the Jaguars’ 47 yard line, Palmer was forced to a short scramble, leading to a punt. The raider defense forced another 3&out after a short completion allowed, as the 3rd quarter came to an end. Right on the first play of the drive, Palmer was strip sacked and the ball was recovered by Jacksonville at the Raiders’ 24 yard line. The raider defense responded with another 3&out, after a Lammar Houston sack. The 45 yard FG was good. Jaguars 23 x 13 Raiders. After 2 incompletions, Palmer faced another 3rd down, and although his pass to Myers was too short, a roughing the passer penalty gave the Raiders a new set of downs. That led to a great Marcel Reece catch and run to the Jaguars’ 38 yard line. 2 plays later, it was 3rd&9, converted by Palmer to Myers despite heavy rush. A Reece catch over the middle put the Raiders on goal line mode. A delay of game and pass interference penalty backed the offense to the 24 yard line. On 3rd&goal at the 13, a diving Rod Streater wasn’t able to make the catch in the corner of the endzone. Janikowski split the uprights from 31 yards. Jaguars 23 x 16 Raiders with 6:52 left in the game.

The Raiders defense had another 3&out after Mike Mitchell blitzed and forced the pass to go incomplete, getting the offense back on the field at their own 42 yard line. The drive started with another sack on Palmer. A quick slant route to Moore created a 3rd&1, converted with a QB sneak. 2 plays later, it was 3rd&6, converted with a fantastic catch by Streater. 2 incompletions later, it was 3rd&10 at the 25, and the deep pass to Streater into the endzone was almost intercepted. Head coach Dennis Allen decides to go for the fourth down, and the play was pretty similar to the last one, instead looking for Heyward-Bey, who drawed the pass interference to put Oakland at the 1 yard line. And a QB sneak got the job done again, as Carson Palmer rushed for the touchdown. Jaguars 23 x 23 Raiders with 3:34 left in the game.

After the touchback, RB Rashad Jennings catch and run got the Jaguars to their own 46 yard line. A WR Cecil Shorts reception into Raiders territory was negated by an offensive pass interference call. After the two-minute warning, it was 3rd&13 at the Jaguars’ 43 yard line and TE Marcedes Lewis was tackled short of the first down, out of bounds. The Raiders got the ball back at their 20 yard line with 1:43 left, due to a touchback. On 3rd&4 at the 26, Palmer’s pass to McFadden was incomplete. The Jaguars got the ball with 1:06 left at their 44 yard line, and two timeouts left. Michael Huff’s almost interception led to a 3rd&3 at midfield, which went for an incompletion. The offense hit the field with 29 seconds left, no timeouts and starting at their own 13 yard line, deciding to play it safe and run the clock down, but a DMC run to the 31 yard line made Palmer spike the ball. Another incredible catch by Streater over the sideline set up a 64 yard FG attempt by Janikowski, but Jano’s strong leg wasn’t enough on this one. Overtime!

The Jaguars got the ball first. A stuffed run by Rolando McClain initiated the drive. Richard Seymour bursted through the middle and got a sack. On a 3rd&20 at the 9, Henne found Shorts over the middle, but Lamarr Houston stripped the ball out of his hands and it was recovered by Joselio Hanson at the 21 yard line. Janikowski stepped onto the field to kick the game-winning FG from 40 yards out and… NAILED IT! The Raiders come from behind and get the victory in overtime! Final score: Jaguars 23 x 26 Raiders.

Carson Palmer finished the game with 26 completions (57%) for 298 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT, and a TD run. Darren McFadden rushed for 53 yards (2.8 YPC). Brandon Myers led the receivers in catches with 7 for 44 yards, while Darrius Heyward-Bey led in yards with 85 on 4 receptions. Denarius Moore contributed with 4 catches for 36 yards and a TD. Lamarr Houston led the defense with 8 total tackles, with also 1 sack and 1 forced fumble. Richard Seymour and Miles Burris also recorded one sack each.

The Raiders will now face the Chiefs in Kansas City on October 28th at 1:05 P.M. (PDT).
