ESPN’s Colin Cowherd says he’d eliminate Oakland from NFL
On Friday’s episode of ESPN’s The Herd with Colin Cowherd, the aforementioned host was having a little fun playing “God” by telling the world what franchises he would eliminate if he were in charge of the four major sports leagues.
Given that I wrote a similar article for another publication earlier in the week, I was interested in what some of his choices would be. For the most part, I was in agreement with his choices. Then it happened.
When he got to the NFL, along with the Bills, Jaguars and Bengals, he said he would eliminate the Oakland Raiders from the NFL.
Say what?
Look, I know it was all in good fun, but he backed up his reasoning by joking back and forth with his producer about hating Oakland (he also cut the A’s). He went on to defend his choices, saying he wasn’t just eliminating small market teams, using Green Bay as his main defense.
Here is the thing Raider Nation. I am comfortable admitting that I am by no means an Oakland Raider fan. I wanted to write for this site because I knew Raider fans were passionate. I’ve gotten into arguments with others defending you as the most passionate in the NFL.
So I waited for Cowherd to attack your passion. That moment never came. He didn’t dare. You got the feeling he knew he was wrong as soon as he said it.
I imagine he was picturing the embarrassingly small crowds in Los Angeles when he let those words roll off his tongue. There is no way he could have been imagining the history and tradition of one of American sports’ proudest franchises. He couldn’t have been picturing John Madden being carried off the field, Bo Jackson running over Bosworth, Marcus Allen changing direction in the Super Bowl, or the face paint in the Black Hole.
Just know, no matter what the talking heads say, real football fans of other teams around the league respect the Oakland Raiders and Raider Nation. There truly is nothing else like the team-fan relationship that Oakland has anywhere else in the country.
No true NFL fan would ever say the NFL is a better place without the Raiders. If you are eliminating franchises based on history, tradition, and passion, surely the Raiders would be at the back of the line.
We’ve had some heated exchanges about certain topics since I started writing for this site, but just know, I’ve got your back. You’ll never catch me spouting such gridiron sacrilegious garbage as Cowherd spouted today.
Stay strong. Just Win Baby.
