Kamerion Wimbley: Will He Be a Cap Casualty?
Hello there RaiderNation!! I am hearing a lot of questions as to whether or not the Oakland Raiders will cut Kamerion Wimbley in an effort to get down under the cap. While I do not pretend to be able to predict moves by the Raiders as well as I could when Al was still around, I feel pretty confident in saying that I just do not see the Raiders cutting Wimbley. It is just not a logical move, and one I feel would only be done in desperation.
Here is the deal; Wimbley’s contract counts as 11 million toward the cap, but 6.5 million of that is guaranteed. That means, if the Raiders were to cut Wimbley, though they would cut 4.5 million off the cap, they would in essence be paying Wimbley 6.5 million dollars to go play for another team. Not a logical move, and one I do not see them making.
Add to that, the fact the Wimbley is exactly the kind of player that Dennis Allen wants to have on his defense, a big, fast defender that is a good rusher (think Von Miller), and the apparent probable move to a 3-4 this year, it is much more logical to keep Wimbley and try to restructure his contract.
It is true that Wimbley has the Raiders over a barrel because of what I previously mentioned regarding his guaranteed money, but restructuring does not necessarily mean a pay cut, and if the Raiders offer Wjmbley the right deal, we can still shave money off the cap without paying him 6.5 million to walk.
Again, I am not guaranteeing Wimbley won’t get cut, but it just doesn’t make sense to do it, and the Raiders are trying to make logical moves. I think it is likely to see Henderson cut, and Hiram Eugene is another possibility as is Chris Johnson. Out of these three, Chris Johnson is the least likely and Henderson is the most likely in my opinion. I say this because Henderson is getting up there in age and was injured a lot this year, and though Chris Johnson is no spring chicken and was injured as well, with Routt gone CB depth will be more important.
Whatever happens, look for the Raiders to “magically” get under the cap with at least a little wiggle room for FA. This happens every single year, but somehow, we always manage to at least make a little splash in FA. Even though Al is gone, this year will be no different.
Peace out RaiderNation!!
