Big 12 Coach Gets His Big Chance With the Raiders
In a surprise move by the Oakland Raiders, they have hired…another college coach. Yes, they continue to follow the script they’ve had from the beginning of Reggie McKenzie’s tenure by hiring a young coach. This time goin’ over to the Big 12 Conference and Dennis Allen’s former school, Texas A & M. That is where they found Terrell Williams and offered him the job of defensive line coach. The position formerly held by Mike Waufle who left the team to join the St. Luis Rams after the season. NBCSports.com cited Mike Passwaters from Rivals.com as the source for the news.
Williams’ coaching career started way back in 1998 at Fort Scott Community College where he coached the defensive line. From there he went on to coach at North Carolina A&T, Youngstown State, Akron, and Purdue before making his way over to Texas A&M in 2010. This will easily be Williams’ most challenging job to date.
So once again, the Raiders bring in an inexperienced coach (from the NFL perspective) to coach a group of veteran players. It’s a move that has not been part of the Raider’s M.O. While it’s true that the Raiders have almost always hired young, up and coming head coaches, the position coaches have generally been ones with many NFL years under their collective belts.
